PARADOR HOLIDAYS
Lorna Roberts has been the official representative in Ireland for the Spanish Parador hotels for 15 years and since 2002 has taken 37 groups on interesting routes around "Real Spain", staying in Paradores. In 2010 Lorna joined forces with MAP Travel in Dublin and they are now working as joint representatives for the Paradores.
The Paradores are owned by the Spanish government who, since 1928 have restored historic buildings and converted them into stylish, comfortable hotels. Their keywords are CHARM, QUALITY and HISTORY. The first Parador was opened in1928 in Gredos in the mountains West of Madrid. There are now 93, many of which are in former castles, palaces, monasteries and convents. Others are in spectacular coastal settings. Most of these are modern buildings, purpose built in the style of the area, as the location is selected rather than the building. Two exceptions are at BAIONA in Galicia, where the Parador is a fortress on a headland with stunning Atlantic views, and at HONDARRIBIA where a castle stands above the Basque town with views of the Bay of Biscay and the French coastline.
Other Paradores are in World Heritage villages, in National Parks, and in some of Spain's most famous cities such as TOLEDO, SEGOVIA, AVILA, GRANADA, SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, CORDOBA, MALAGA and SALAMANCA.
There are 5 Paradores in the Canary Islands and 2 in the Spanish enclaves in North Africa at CEUTA and MELILLA.
Two new Paradores are opening in at LORCA, in Murcia, and on the seafront in the historic city of CADIZ, the European city of culture in 2012.
